What is the etiquette for funeral fundraising?

I’ve been getting numerous emails about an upcoming fundraising event to pay for the costs associated with a acquaintance’s funeral. It seems that somehow I’m on the mailing list, although I’ve never been close with the deceased. Is this practice becoming more common? From an etiquette point of view, is it appropriate?
