Is there proper etiquette in regards to contacting a male classmate who has a significant other?

If you have a male classmate and u were assigned to do a project with him, what is the proper etiquette when it comes to contacting him if he has a girlfriend? I’ve heard that some guys with significant others tend to prefer certain times for female classmates to contact them (regarding an assignment) because they are nervous that their girlfriends will get jealous even if the situation is actually innocent. I was just wondering if there were certain rules of etiquette regarding this.
